Obituary

Joyce Smith, the daughter of Grady W. and Mildred R. MacDonald Leeper was born July 8, 1955 near Bently, Oklahoma. She passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the Immanuel Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska after a five year battle with cancer, at the age of 53 years, 10 months and 5 days. Joyce lived with her family in Oklahoma until the age of eight, when they moved to California. When she was 14 years old, the family moved to Atlantic, Iowa. Joyce graduated from Atlantic High School in l973. She moved to Red Oak in l980 and began working at D & L Company. Joyce was united in marriage to Greg Smith on July 31, 1981 in Estherville, Iowa. She continued her education at Southwest Community College in Clarinda and Creston. Joyce received her LPN license in l987 and became a Registered Nurse on June 12, 1992. She worked at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, mainly in Oncology from December 1986 to February 2002. She then began working for Clarinda Mental Health. Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family, camping and boating. Joyce loved her grandchildren dearly. During her illness she found raising chickens to be calming and a relaxing hobby. Joyce was preceded in death by her father and sister, Donna Jean Rodriguez. Joyce is survived by her husband: Greg Smith of Red Oak, IA; children: Lisa Jenkins of Red Oak, IA; Joe Smith of Red Oak, IA; Heather Smith and husband Rob of Red Oak, IA; five granddaughters: Chloey and Olivia Jenkins; Ashley Valentine; Ashley Peterson; Stefanie Smith; mother: Mildred R. Roof of Red Oak, IA; brothers: Harold and Bill Leeper of Red Oak, IA; Charles Roof of Red Oak, IA; other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. Caryn Pedersen, Officiating Visitation with the family present at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials to the American Cancer Society Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
