Katherine Anita Jane Walker, the daughter of Cecil E. and Katherine E. Brown Thomas was born May 5, 1942 in Santa Monica, CA. She passed away Friday, October 26, 2007 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, IA following a second but brief, battle with cancer at the age of 65 years, 5 months and 21 days. Following WWII and when Anita was three, the family moved from California to northeast Oklahoma and southeast Kansas where they farmed. In 1956, the family relocated to Lawrence, KS, where Anita graduated from high school in 1960. She began her years of higher education at University of Kansas. On November 24, 1962, Anita married John D. Walker in Lawrence, KS. Pursuing his newspaper career, they lived in Crookston, MN; Farmington, MO; Post Clinton, OH; Excelsior Springs, MO; Hays, KS; and Two Harbors, MN. They then moved to Princeton, MN where they owned and operated the local newspaper. Anita continued her college education over the years while working and raising their family. As the family made their home in different states, Anita continued classes at a nearby college. She attended classes at Ft. Hays State College, Hays, KS and University of Minnesota at Duluth, MN. After selling the publication in Princeton, MN, John accepted the position of Advertising Director at The Red Oak Express from 1977-1991, where Anita continued classes at Southwest Community College in Red Oak. In 1977, Anita began her public service, as a clerk in the Motor Vehicle Department of the Montgomery County Treasurer's Office. She served as Chief Deputy for two Treasurers, before being appointed to fill out the remaining term of Dale Lindner, in 1992. Anita was reelected as Montgomery County Treasurer every four years, and earlier this year completed 30 years of service to Montgomery County residents. Anita was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Red Oak, serving on many church committees and helping with many of the children's activities. She was a member of Republican Women of Montgomery County and Iowa Association of County Treasurers. Anita enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Anita was preceded in death by her parents. Anita is survived by her husband, John D. Walker of Red Oak, IA; daughter, Jennifer L. Shaffer and husband Robert of Liberty, MO; son, Coral David Walker II and Ann Vos of Malvern, IA; brother, James Thomas of Rose Hill, KS; sister, Margaret Dixon and husband Tom of Wichita, KS; and five grandchildren: Dakota and Katherine Shaffer of Liberty, MO; Cassandra, Coral David III and Chelsea Walker of Malvern, IA; other relatives and a host of friends. Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Red Oak Inurnment of cremated remains will be held at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. Nancy Schultz, Officiating Visitation with the family present will be held on Tuesday, October 30 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Red Oak in Anita's name. Service entrusted to Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home.
