Kathryn Doris Charlotte Schenck, the daughter of Reinhold "Ray" and Elvera C. (Sundberg) Anderson was born November 30, 1916 in Scott Township of Montgomery County near Stanton, Iowa. She passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Red Oak Healthcare Community, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 96 years, 5 months and 25 days. Kathryn was raised in Stanton, Iowa and Fergus Falls, Minnesota. She lost her hearing at the age of 14 due to spinal meningitis and became a skilled lip-reader. She graduated high school at Fergus Falls. Kathryn moved back to Red Oak and worked for the Thos D. Murphy Co. until her marriage to Carroll Schenck on May 28, 1939 in Red Oak. They started their family in Red Oak before moving to Shenandoah, Iowa in l947. While in Shenandoah, Kathryn worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's auto parts store. Kathryn and Carroll returned to Red Oak in l968. In 1969, she began working for the City of Red Oak as a clerk, until her retirement in l981. Kathryn was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah and then Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak. Kathryn enjoyed cooking, canning and baking her sons' favorite cookies at Christmas. She loved spending time with her family and friends, playing cards and attending all her coffee groups. Kathryn was proud to have lived independently in her own home well into her nineties. When she entered the Red Oak Healthcare Community just a few months ago, she was the oldest resident at the age of 95. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 49 years, Carroll Schenck on February 23, 1988; and brother, Norman Anderson. Kathryn is survived by her three sons: Robert Schenck and wife Denise Brady of Omaha, NE, Ronald Schenck of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Richard Schenck and wife Margaret of Harlan, IA; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Rosalie Anderson of Littleton, CO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Open viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home. Private Family Graveside will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Red Oak, Iowa Memorials may be given in Kathryn's name to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
