Obituary

Kathryn Alice Colwell Hart was born August 9, 1929, to Tom D. Colwell and Alice Belle Tenhulzen Colwell at St Joseph, MO. She passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022, at Arlington Place, Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 93 years, 3 months, and 24 days.

The oldest of seven children, Kathryn attended school at St Joseph, MO, and then Westboro, MO, where she graduated from high school as her class valedictorian. She attended Northwest Missouri and taught at several rural schools in Missouri and Iowa. Kathryn was united in marriage to Kenneth Hart on October 4, 1950. She became a stay-at-home mom after her first child was born and continued in that role until her youngest went to school. Kathryn was employed at The Red Oak Express for over 16 years and the Troll House for 7 years. She liked to read, sew, and make other hand crafts. Kathryn was a member of the First Covenant Church, Red Oak, after she and Kenneth move from Stanton to Red Oak in 1996. She enjoyed helping the Covenant women make many quilts that was sent to Open Door Mission in Omaha, as well as making quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth on May 20, 2003, parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Kathryn is survived by her three children: Kathy and husband Mark Tornquist, Redmond, WA, Kevin, Marcus IA, and Karen and husband Terry Blackburn of Lincoln, NE. She was a wonderful Nana, loving her six grandchildren: Tara Thorsvik and husband Tony, Meridian, ID, Zach Hart, Omaha, NE, Justina Hart, Omaha, NE, Keith Blackburn, Fort Collins, CO, Sean Tornquist, Norwalk, CA and Kerry Deters and husband Adam, Omaha, NE. Also, three great-grandchildren: Noah Hart, Marcus, IA, Jamelia Hart, Omaha, NE, and Kinsley Deters, Omaha, NE. Kathryn is also survived by brother, Keith Colwell and wife Dolly of Greensboro NC; sister, Barbara Merritt of St Joseph, MO, plus in-laws and many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and many friends.

A private (immediate family only) graveside service will be conducted.
Interment will be in Mt Hope Cemetery, Nyman, IA.

A Celebration of Life gathering with her family will be held Saturday, December 17, 2022, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm in the fellowship hall of the First Covenant church, Red Oak.

In lieu of flowers, it was Kathryn's wish for memorials to be directed to either the Stanton Library or the Red Oak library where her love of reading can be passed on.
