Keith Delbert Nelson, the son of Glendon and Agnes (Miller) Nelson was born September 29, 1931 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, March 21, 2014 at his home in rural Page County at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 21 days.
When Keith was two years old his mother, Agnes died. His father then married Cecile Larson. Keith was raised in the Essex area and attended Hill Crest Country School. He attended Essex High School for three years, and his senior year at Clarinda High graduating in 1949. Following graduation, Keith farmed with his father until joining the Army in 1953, during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany and honorably discharged in 1954. Keith returned to the Essex area and continued farming. On September 17, 1955, Keith was united in marriage to Barbara Carlson at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak, Iowa. He worked at Johnson Brothers Feed in Shenandoah and Essex in the 1990's. Keith was a lifetime member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Brotherhood, Bethesda Church Council board, Bethesda Cemetery board member and was a Lutheran League sponsor. Keith served as treasurer for the Essex Telephone Company Board for 33 years. He was a member of the Page County Extension board and a lifetime member of the Page County Farm Bureau. Keith was a past 4-H leader of the Fremont Farmers in Page County and was the Assistant Superintendent of Sheep at the Page County Fair for many years. Keith was a member of the Essex American Legion Weatherall-Hadden-Holmes Post #333. He enjoyed farming and working as a mechanic.
Keith was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Sterling Carlson.
Keith is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Nelson of Essex, IA; daughters: Vicki Karolson and husband, John of North Little Rock, AR; and Terri Clark and husband, Bradley of Platte City, MO; son, Bryan Nelson and wife, Tess of Shenandoah, IA; 5 grandchildren: Michelle Mahoney and husband, Jackie of Cabot, AR; Keith Nelson and wife, Haley of Claremore, OK; Steven Nelson of Talala, OK; Taylor Clark of Liberty, MO and Colt Nelson of Shenandoah, IA; 4 great-grandchildren: Abigail and Gavin Mahoney and Keith Glendon and Lillian Nelson; sister-in-law, Maxine Carlson of Glenwood, IA; and niece, Diane Carlson of Omaha, NE; other relatives and many friends.
