Lawrence D. Cavner, age 82 of Stanton, Iowa Lawrence Donald Cavner, was born June 4, 1925 at the family home in College Springs, Iowa, the first child of Leland and Edith Beezley Cavner. He died on Sunday, May 25, 2008 after a brief illness at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 21 days. Following graduation from College Springs High School in May of 1943, Lawrence worked on several area farms and for Wilson Packing Company in Omaha, NE. He then went to work on the assembly line of the Fort Crook Nebraska Martin Bomber Plant at what is now part of Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. During his time on the assembly line, Lawrence was involved with the construction of over 1500 B-26 Marauder Bombers and 500 B-29 bombers including the famous "Enola Gay" which greatly contributed to the rapid close of the war with Japan. On September 13, 1945, Lawrence was united in marriage to Alice Gamble of Coin, Iowa. They settled in College Springs until the end of WW II, when they moved to Stanton, IA and farmed for E. M. Coppage. Lawrence and Alice farmed in the Stanton area for 14 years, where they raised four children. In 1961, Lawrence joined the Grain Storage Division of the ASCS, where he became Manager of the Red Oak office in l966, serving in that capacity until retiring in January of l986. In l963, the family moved to a small acreage on the south side of Stanton. Lawrence developed the acreage into the Highland Oaks Subdivision in 1970 and built numerous homes. During his many years of farming and in business, Lawrence stayed active in the Stanton Community and starting in May of 1970, was elected to the City Council before being elected to the office of Mayor in l974, a position he held for 15 years. Lawrence was especially proud over the years of his actual work on the Viking Lake project in its early years and of the great attraction it has now become in Southwest Iowa. He was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, IA and served as the Chairperson of the Democratic Party in Montgomery County for several years. Lawrence was a past member of the Red Oak Optimist Club and Lions Club in Stanton. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Alice Cavner of Stanton, IA; their four children: Linda Nelson and Joel Myers of Dallas Center, IA; Janice Black and Winfield Mayne of Villisca, IA; James Cavner of Stanton, IA; Anita and John Koynock of Chardon, OH; sisters: Doris McCluskey of Fort Collins, CO; Kathryn and Bill Simpson of College Springs, IA; brother, Lloyd and Dorothy Cavner of Clarinda, IA; Lawrence and Alice have both enjoyed the many visits and time spent with their many grandchildren, including: Kyle Long of Mitchell, NE; Jamison and Brenda Long of Omaha, NE; Jesse and Shannon Nelson of Ankeny, IA; Sarah and Aaron Wilson of North Mankato, MN and Justin and Emily Black of Rochester, MN; great-grandchildren; Cooper and Maxwell Long of Omaha, NE and Andrew Nelson of Ankeny, IA; other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa Burial in Mamre Cemetery, Stanton Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli, Officiating Visitation with the family present at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, May 28 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Memorial is being established in Lawrence's name.
