Leila Hope Smith, the daughter of Clarence and Effie Trekell Larkin was born July 2, 1920 in Cleveland, Missouri. She died on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 3 days. Leila was raised in Missouri, moving to Red Oak, Iowa when she was 17 years old. She went to work for the Johnson Hotel and was then united in marriage to Ernest E. Smith on June 11, 1938 in Albany, Missouri. Leila and Ernest have made Red Oak their home since. She enjoyed collecting candlestick holders and over the past number of years sharing them with family. Leila also enjoyed reading, gardening and antiques. She loved her family and spending time with her neighbors during the Thursday morning coffee club. Leila was preceded in death by her parents; son Steve Smith; sister Laura; and 5 brothers: Jim, Bill, Clarence, Walter and A.L. ""Speed"". Leila is survived by her husband of 72 years, Ernest E. Smith of Red Oak, IA; son Mike Smith and wife Bev of Beaver Lake, NE; daughters: Sherry Davis and husband Chuck of Boulder, CO; and Sally Alger and husband Randy of Stanton, IA; daughter-in-law Barb Smith of Crescent, IA; 8 grandchildren: Shelley Burson, Ellen Dasher, Mikalee Smith, Brett Smith, Rhonda Smith, Matt Shehan, Amber Volquartsen and Jared Shehan; 13 great-grandchildren: Kate, Kelsey, Tommy, Jake, Tabi, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Grace, Joey, Abby, Ryan, Sam and Dane; and great-great-grandchild Lily; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Private Family Memorial Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, IA.
