Letha May McFarland, the daughter of Joseph Martin and Tilda Emelia Houghsten Wyatt was born October 22, 1907 in Adams County, Iowa. She died on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Society of Villisca, Iowa at the age of 100 years, 4 months and 5 days. Letha attended grade school in Adams County and graduated from Corning High School in June, 1927. After graduation, she went to Chicago with her sister Lila and worked for Montgomery Wards Catalog Company for one year. Due to her mother's health problems, Letha came back to help on the farm. Later, she began working at Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Company, until being layed off. She began housekeeping for Mrs. Cole who lived south of Red Oak. On November 27, 1929, Letha was united in marriage to Paul D. McFarland in Rockport, MO. During the Great Depression, Letha and Paul lived and worked on Letha's parents' farm. During WW II, they lived in Olathe, KS and California. In 1943, Letha and Paul settled on their farm northeast of Stanton. She enjoyed camping and spending time in Arizona during the winter months. Letha became a resident of Villisca Good Samaritan Society in November, 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 72 years, Paul on June 23, 2002; 2 sisters: Lila Johnson and Kathryn Hamilton; 5 brothers: Arther Wyatt, Harvey Wyatt, Robert Wyatt, Myron Wyatt and Olin Wyatt; and son-in-law: Frank Messer. Letha is survived by 3 daughters: Mrs. Marilyn Messer of Kansas City, MO; Pauline Bisbee and husband Jack of Stanton, IA; Carolyn Ragan and husband Bob of Calabasas, CA; 10 grandchildren: Delmar Messer; Debbie Martin; Sheryl Titus; Kathy Wilson; Kevin Messer; Teresa Nash; Diane Bisbee Jackson; David Bisbee; Connie Ragan; Terry Stewart; 17 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; brother: Joe Wyatt of Jefferson, IA; brother-in-law: Jerry Shook of Kansas City, MO; sister-in-law: Barbara Perkins of Shell Knob, MO; other relatives and friends.
