Lillian Cecelia (Anderson) Mercer was born April 5, 1917 in Bethesda, Iowa to Gust A. and Esther C. (Johnson) Anderson. She passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 99 years, 9 months and 29 days.
Lillian was raised in rural Montgomery County, Iowa and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1934. She married Gurney Mercer on September 27, 1939 and they made their home in Red Oak, Iowa. Lillian worked in the bakery at Hunt's Super Valu and had many jobs cleaning and babysitting for people. Gurney and Lillian enjoyed making loom rag-rugs, as she assisted him by cutting the material he used for the rugs. After Gurney's passing, she later moved to Halland Village in Stanton, Iowa and in December of 2007, moved to the Stanton Care Center.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gurney on January 10, 1989; sisters, Edith Smith, Clara Anderson and Selma Benskin; and brothers, Albert and Elmer Anderson.
Lillian is survived by four generations of nieces and nephews; godsons, Gene Erickson of Michigan and Joe Erickson of California, who she considered her boys because she babysat them for many years; sisters-in-law: Norma Mercer of Stanton, IA and Opal Mullins of Centerville, IA; and many friends.
