Obituary

Lois Marilyn Nelson, the daughter of Iver Hanson and Velma Bergholm was born June 7, 1930 in Red Oak, Iowa. She passed away after an extended illness on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Garden View Health Care Center, Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 7 months and 19 days.

Marilyn graduated from Red Oak High School in 1948, after which she attended Red Oak Junior College. She lived all but the last 14 months in Red Oak and was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir beginning her senior year in high school. Marilyn worked in the Law Office of Jonathan B. Richards for 37 years as a legal secretary. During that time, she graduated from LaSalle Extension University as a certified stenotypist and served as a substitute court reporter. In November 1958, Marilyn graduated from the Institute of Scientific Studies, a course sponsored by MIT, in Nuclear Engineering. After the death of Jonathan B. Richards, she worked for attorney, John K. Petersen. Marilyn later worked at Bethlehem Lutheran Church as their secretary and treasurer until 1998, and then for Loomis Abstract Co. During the 1950's, she was active in and served as Chief Observer in the Ground Observer Corp., a group organized by SAC Air Force Base. In more recent years she was active in the local Citizens Patrol.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Louise Hanson.

Marilyn is survived by her brother, Donald Hanson of Pasadena, TX; nieces: Lynda (Terry) Dowd of Katy, TX, Donna Turner of Deer Park, TX, and Sandra (Jeff) Bonnardel of Missouri City, TX; great nieces and nephews; Richard, Patrick, Wendy, Kristi, and Andrew; cousins and other relatives and friends.
