Mark Thomas
Raney
April 25, 1954 – December 19, 2024
Mark Thomas Raney, the son of James and LaDonna (Carlson) Raney was born April 25, 1954, at Corning, Iowa. He passed away on December 19, 2024, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 4 days.
Mark was raised in rural Villisca, Iowa, and confirmed at Mamrelund Lutheran Church. He graduated from Villisca High School in 1973, where he lettered in both football and track. After graduation, Mark farmed until the fall of 1977. On February 17, 1978, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served three years as an infantryman with Company B, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. His service also took him to Korea before he was honorably discharged on June 4, 1981. Shortly after, Mark enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard on June 17, 1981, serving as a Specialist with the Detachment of Company A, 1-168th Infantry until his discharge on May 25, 1993. Following his military service, Mark worked as a painter for several years and later as a farmhand for Dean Gourley. Outside of work, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, snow skiing in Colorado, and camping with his brother Randy. Mark had a special fondness for his white Corvette and his dog, B.B. He especially cherished time spent with his family at Okoboji. Mark was a quiet man, yet he never met a stranger. He loved his family dearly and will be remembered for his warmth, loyalty, and the simple joys he found in life.
Mark was preceded in death by his mother, LaDonna Raney and brother, Randy Raney.
Mark is survived by his father, James Raney of Stanton, IA; sister, Judy (Larry) Rhamy of Avoca, IA and brother, Larry (Nancy) Raney of Winterset, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn.
