Obituary

Martha Jean Heckert, the daughter of William and Anna (Ford) Guffey was born March 31, 1921, in Wayne County, Kentucky. She passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 100 years, 6 months and 16 days.

At the age of 6 months, Martha moved to Page County, Iowa, with her parents and siblings. In 1938, she graduated from Red Oak High School and attended Red Oak Junior College for two years. She began working for Murphy Calendar Company for two years, then Houghton State Bank, three years. In 1949, Martha then went to work for the Union Carbide Battery Company. On September 16, 1961, Martha was united in marriage to Robert Heckert in Red Oak, Iowa. After 37 years with Union Carbide, Martha retired in 1986. She enjoyed needle work, camping and especially helping others. Martha was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church, serving in many positions which included, board member, moderator, treasurer and Sunday school teacher. Currently, she was a member of The Bridge Church. Martha was also a member of the Classy Cats (Union Carbide retirees) and was involved with their scholarship committee.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert on June 28, 2001; sisters: Elizabeth and Mary Guffey; brothers and their wives: Ray (Rozella) Guffey and James "Jack" (Betty) Guffey; infant sister and brother; and nephew, Jim Guffey.

Martha is survived by nephews: Ray (Sue) Guffey and Rodney (Lois) Guffey; nieces: Dora (Myrle) McCullough, Ruth (Jerry) Blackmore and Janell (Richard) Rankin; many great-nieces and nephews; several great-great-nieces and nephews; and her church family and friends.

At Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa

Family and friends will meet at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery.
