Mary Ann Hammer, the daughter of Bert W. and Olive E. Buffon Penry was born September 12, 1930 in Red Oak, Iowa. She passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at the Creighton Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska, the age of 79 years, 10 months and 29 days. Mary was raised in the Red Oak area and attended school at Stennett. Mary was united in marriage to Wayne C. Hammer on March 5, 1947 in Troy, Kansas. After Wayne's military service they made their home in Red Oak. Mary worked for Union Carbide Battery Company for 38 years, before her retirement. She enjoyed the outdoors, where she grew her beautiful flowers, along with raising a vegetable garden. Mary enjoyed canning her vegetables to treat her family throughout the year. Mary enjoyed the many bus trips she and Wayne took traveling around the United States. She also enjoyed bowling and visits to the casino. For many years, Mary helped cook and serve for the Court of Honor Soup and Pie Supper. She also spent many hours volunteering at Vista Gardens Care Center. Most importantly she treasured time spent with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary was a member of the First Christian Church in Red Oak and the Union Carbide Classy Cats. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers: Francis and Fay; and sister, Elsie. Mary is survived by her husband of 63 years, Wayne C. Hammer of Red Oak, IA; 2 sons: Dennis Hammer and wife Denise of Tabor, IA and David Hammer of Red Oak, IA; 2 grandchildren: Melinda McCormick and husband Mike of Lincoln, NE and Matthew Hammer of Gretna, NE; 3 great-grandchildren: Drake and Kalyssa McCormick and Shelby Hammer; 2 brothers: James and Guy Penry of Red Oak, IA; 3 sisters: Nancy and Shirley Penry of Red Oak, IA and Mrs. Laura Anderson of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law, Betty Bolton of Red Oak, IA; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
