Mary Ellen Peterson, the daughter of Peter S. and Lydia (Bondo) Peterson was born December 22, 1921, in Underwood, Iowa, a rural town a few miles northeast of Council Bluffs, Iowa. She passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 2 months and 2 days.
Mary spent her growing up years in Underwood, and was a 1940 graduate of Underwood High School and the first homecoming queen in l940. After high school graduation Mary attended business school for secretarial training in Los Angeles, California. During that time she lived with her older sister Ramona who worked as a Registered Nurse in Los Angeles. After completion of secretarial training she worked for a time as a secretary for a firm involved in the development of amphibious landing craft used in military operations. She was united in marriage to Carol M. Peterson of Stanton, Iowa on December 17, 1942, in Santa Ana, California. To this union four sons were born: Carl, Michael, Darwin and Phillip. Carol was in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the time of their marriage. After Carol's service as a bombardier and navigator in the European Theater during WW II they moved to the Stanton area where they farmed for many years. Her large garden each summer helped provide vegetables and fruits through the following winter. After their family was grown, Mary and Carol took some time for traveling. They saw much of the United States and enjoyed a trip to Israel and a trip to Italy. Mary was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Red Oak.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carol on August 13, 2013; three sisters: Ramona Gittins, Helen Erickson and Ferne Fritz; three brothers: Clarence, Albert and Marvin; a grandson, Stephen Peterson.
Mary is survived by four sons: Carl Peterson and wife Darlene of King City, MO; Michael Peterson of Tiffin, IA; Darwin Peterson of Coralville, IA; Phillip Peterson and wife Rebecca of Bluefield, VA; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 2, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Grace Baptist Church in Red Oak, IA
Burial will be at the Arlington Cemetery, rural Villisca, IA
