Obituary

Mathilda "Tillie" Howrey, the daughter of Henrique and Maria Rosa (Melim) de Vasconcellos was born November 10, 1921 at Hilo, Hawaii. She passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 3 months and 9 days. Tillie was raised in Hawaii by her Portuguese immigrant parents. She was united in marriage to Leon Pate and later married Donald W. Howrey on December 29, 1956 at Hilo, Hawaii. Tillie and Donald moved to Omaha, Nebraska in l957. In 1960 they moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where they resided until Donald's death, December 16, l997. Tillie lived in Denver, Colorado with her daughter from 1997 to 2000 and then moved to Red Oak. She enjoyed listening to music, dancing the Hula, camping, and cooking. Tillie spent her spare time crocheting and crafting. After Tillie and Don retired, they loved to visit all the children and grandchildren. She enjoyed life to the fullest even without having learned to drive a car. She was a member of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Tillie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald on December 16, 1997; 14 brothers and sisters: Mary, Manuel, Isabelle, Henry, Philomina, Augusta, Hilda, John, Constance, Helen, Louis, Daniel, Margaret and Lucy. Tillie is survived by three daughters: Pamela (William) Overin of Englewood, CO, Madeline (Ernest) Waltjen of Keaau, HI and Carla (Matthew) Anderson of Council Bluffs, IA; 7 granddaughters; 3 grandsons; 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak, IA Inurnment in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, IA Father Thomas Kunnel, TOR, Officiating A memorial is being established in Tillie's name.
