Norma Ruth Patterson Johnson, daughter of Lawrence and Jeannette Johnson Patterson was born November 1, 1924 on the family farm, east of Essex in Page County, Iowa. She passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 9 days. Norma was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex. She attended country school and graduated from Essex High School and Red Oak Junior College. Prior to her marriage, she taught country school in Page County. On August 20, 1948, Norma was united in marriage to Carl Albert Johnson at St John's Lutheran Church in Essex. They lived on a farm southwest of Stanton until December 1988 when they moved into Stanton. Norma was an active member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School, served on the Church Council and worked on many projects for the Women of the ELCA. She was a member of the Stanton American Legion Auxiliary and Friendly Study Club, and volunteered at the Stanton Care Center. Norma was an avid reader and enjoyed writing letters to friends and family members. Norma received the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award for her work taping books for the Iowa Commission for the Blind. She also received Stanton's Ole Award in 1988. Norma and Carl Albert loved to watch their grandchildren participate in church, school, and community activities. They especially enjoyed having family and holiday celebrations at their home. Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl Albert on September 29, 2005; grandson, Brent Johnson; and brother, LaVern Patterson. Norma is survived by her four children and their spouses: Barbara Johnson Frank & Alan of Lincoln, NE; Richard Johnson & Karol of Stanton, IA; Carleen Bruning & Kenny of Stanton, IA; and Tim Johnson of Red Oak, IA; nine grandchildren: Rachel Frank & husband Luis, Sarah Frank, Chris Johnson, Brenda Steenhoek & husband Brad, Kent Johnson & wife Stacy, Amy Sallach & husband Jeff, Kelly Bruning, Kevin Bruning, and Cyndi Johnson; eight great-grandchildren: Brady, Drake, Carter & Marleigh Johnson, Denton Roberts, Cameron & Caden Sallach and Eliana Genis Frank; brother, Glenn Patterson & wife Marie of Essex, IA; sister-in-law, Karen Patterson of Essex, IA; and aunts: Frances Hogberg and Lucille Patterson; other relatives and many friends. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. At Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Stanton, Iowa Burial in Mamre Cemetery Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli, Officiating Visitation with the family well be held Tuesday, May 12, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Mamrelund Lutheran church, Stanton, Iowa Family request memorials in lieu of flowers to Mamrelund Lutheran Church.
