Obituary

Norma Loraine Liljedahl Kampe was born December 26, 1917 in Genoa, Nebraska. In 1918, she was adopted and became the daughter of Oscar and Alma Anderson Liljedahl of Essex, Iowa. Norma passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, IA at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 29 days. Norma was baptized at the Fremont Lutheran Church, Nyman, IA on February 16, 1919. She was confirmed at the same church on June 4, 1933. Norma was a life long active member of the Fremont Lutheran Church as were her parents and husband. Norma grew up on a farm south of Coburg, IA and attended school in Coburg. She graduated from there on May 22, 1935. On March 6, 1936, Norma married Lester Franklin Kampe at the Grandview Lutheran church, in Des Moines, IA. Lester's uncle, Walton Kampe was the presiding minister. To this marriage, two children, Don and Sally, were born. They lived on a farm in the Nyman Essex community all their married life. After Lester's death in 1981, Norma moved to Red Oak where she resided on Inman Drive. In December 2006, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Red Oak until her death. Norma worked at Union Carbide for 17 years. She also helped Lester at the Red Oak Elks Club when he managed the Club, especially when there were large events held there. After moving to Red Oak, she volunteered at Fremont Lutheran Church, Hysham House, Vista Gardens, and the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of WELCA, Fremont Lutheran Church, Nyman Birthday club, VIC-Houghton State Bank, bridge clubs and Monday Club. Norma enjoyed her family and always attended the events that her children participated in. She and Lester particularly enjoyed football games when Don played on the Red Oak team and the University of Nebraska football team, and when Sally was a cheerleader at Red Oak High School. She also enjoyed attending the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After their children had established their own homes, Lester and Norma spent most winters at their home in Mesa, AZ, enjoying their time with many friends. A few years after Lester's death, Norma sold her Arizona home and remained in Red Oak. She liked to travel on trips with the VIC Club of Houghton State Bank, volunteering, playing cards and tending to her flowers. Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Kampe on June 13, 1981; son, Don Kampe on September 6, 2010; and son-in-law, Jim Kelker on October 4, 2002. Left to mourn Norma are her daughter, Sally Kampe Kelker of Mesa AZ; daughter-in-law, Gerri Kampe of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren: Jane Kampe Lynam and husband Mike of Omaha, NE; Doug Kampe and wife Deb of Eden Prairie, MN; Lori Kelker Samplin and husband Martin of Glendale, AZ; and Kevin Kelker of Mesa, AZ; five great-grandchildren: Paige, Madison and Sarah Lynam of Omaha, NE; Brittany and Max Nanzig of Eden Prairie, MN and Kaitlyn Kelker of Mesa, AZ; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fremont Lutheran Church, Nyman, IA Burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Nyman Rev. Jerry Lamb, Officiating Memorial to be established in Norma's name. Visitation with the family present will be Wednesday, December 29 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
