Rachel M. Anderson, the daughter of Tom and Glydia Kelley Day was born July 13, 1917 at Villisca, Iowa. She passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 9 days. Rachel grew up on the Day Farm near Hepburn, Iowa, but lived most of her life in Stanton. She graduated from Villisca High School in l934 and went to Northwest Missouri State College for two years. She began her teaching career at rural Gridley School. In 1938, she started teaching in Stanton. Rachel was united in marriage on August 31, 1941 to Randolph Bus Anderson of Stanton and eventually became the mother of four daughters. During World War II, Rachel lived in Villisca, while Bus spent three years in the Army stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. After his return, they moved back to Stanton. Rachel returned to full time teaching in 1952 and continued her education and earned her teaching degree. She taught 2nd grade in Stanton for many years and retired in l982. Besides her teaching career and raising four daughters, Rachel always felt one of her greatest accomplishments was having all four daughters married in a 13 month span at Mamrelund Lutheran Church. Rachel was an avid Cubs fan, enjoyed playing cards and reading. She was active in the Stanton Senior Citizens, American Legion Auxiliary, the 20th Century Club and various other organizations. She was a long time member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church. Rachel lived in the house she and Bus purchased in 1952 until January 2011, when she fell and broke her femur. Rachel had been a resident of the Stanton Care Center since February of 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Glydia Kelley Day, husband Randolph on January 17, 1986, grandson, Karl Hundtofte, four brothers, and one sister. Rachel is survived by four daughters: Sara Chet Worm of Omaha, NE; Martha Vern Hundtofte of Council Bluffs, IA; Linda John Nyquist of Chicago, IL and Teresa Rick Arrington of Dubuque, IA; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
