Obituary

Richard 'Dick' Baird, 61 of Red Oak, Iowa Richard Paul 'Dick' Baird, the son of Harold and Martha Stephens Baird was born August 1, 1946 in Creston, Iowa. He passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at his home in Red Oak after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 61 years, 5 months and 4 days. Dick was raised in Iowa and graduated from Storm Lake High School, Storm Lake, IA. He entered the U.S. Army on March 29, 1965, serving until March 28, 1968 when he was honorably discharged. Following the military, Dick lived in Storm Lake, Iowa for 11 years. In 1980, he moved to Red Oak. Dick was the head 'scratch' cook at the Red Coach in Red Oak for 18 years. He was a true NASCAR fan, and to him the only drivers were Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Dick enjoyed collecting Earnhardt #3 and #8 memorabilia and his collection is very extensive. He loved going to the races at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. Dick also enjoyed woodworking, horses and reading Western stories. Dick was preceded in death by two brothers: Darwin Keith Baird and James Baird. Dick is survived by his companion of 20 years: Debbie Anderson of Red Oak, IA; parents: Harold and Martha Baird of Red Oak, IA; brother: Don Baird and wife Donna of Arvada, CO; sister-in-law: Bernice Baird of Villisca, IA; nieces; nephew; close friends: Kerry & Donna Yeager and their children Dillon and Nicky; other relatives along with a host of friends. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak with Military Graveside Rites Mr. Jerry Dietz, Officiating Visitation with the family present at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, January 8 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Debbie Anderson.
