Obituary

Richard LaVern Blackburn, the son of Robert and Ruby (Selders) Blackburn was born January 23, 1937, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away suddenly on January 9, 2024, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Richard was raised in Shenandoah, Iowa, where he graduated from high school. On June 23, 1957, Richard was united in marriage to Mary L. Woodin in Essex, Iowa. They soon moved to Red Oak and Richard began working as an inspector for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He retired after more than 35 years of service. Richard enjoyed coffee time with friends, working on cars and was an excellent woodcarver. He always kept his yard manicured and loved gardening.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary on March 24, 2020; daughter, Diane Briggs and great-granddaughter, Madison.

Richard is survived by three children: Terry (Karen) Blackburn of Lincoln, NE, Rick Blackburn of Red Oak, IA and Cheryl (Scott) Marsden of Papillion, NE; son-in-law, Ted Briggs of Red Oak, IA; six grandchildren: Keith Blackburn, Kerry (Adam) Deters, Daniel (Morgan) Marsden, Emily Marsden, Kyle Marsden and Jessica Briggs; three great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Donald Woodin of Essex IA; other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held Friday, April 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa

Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.
