Richard Thomas Freeburg, the son of Thure and Ingeborg Nelson Freeburg was born March 17, 1933 in Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at his home in Red Oak, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 24 days. Richard lived his entire life in Red Oak. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1950. Richard served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he returned to Red Oak and worked as a carpenter. On May 2, 1956, Richard was united in marriage to Berneice Loving in Red Oak. To this union, six daughters were born. In 1965, Richard began his career with Iowa Power and Light. In 1996, he retired from MidAmerican Energy in the gas division after 31 years of service. Richard loved woodworking and wood carving, along with visiting with his retired co-workers over breakfast. Richard was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Montgomery County Veteran's Memorial Court of Honor. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Sean Volquartsen. Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Berneice Freeburg of Red Oak, IA; daughters: Sue Freeburg and special friend Miles Best of Ft. Collins, CO; Sandy Hansen and husband Steve of Atlantic, IA; Shelly Binns and husband Chris of Walnut, IA; Stacy Freeburg of North Liberty, IA; Silvia Freeburg and husband John Durkan of Omaha, NE; and Sonia Kunze and husband Mitch of Red Oak, IA; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Marcella Cooling of Waterloo, IA; and sister-in-law, Helen Grove of Red Oak, IA; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Red Oak Rev. Fred Pilecki, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Monday, November 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Interment at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
