Robert L. Hossle, the son of Harold and Ferne (Smith) Hossle was born December 16, 1929 at Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 14 days.
Robert was raised in the Emerson area and graduated from Emerson High School in 1947. He began farming for himself, along with helping farm for the McGrew and Douglas families. Robert was united in marriage to Lois A. Carlson on December 31, 1949 in Red Oak, Iowa. They made their home on a farm east of Emerson in 1947, where Robert continued to reside until his death. Robert was a farmer through and through, he grew row crop, raised cattle and milk cows and sold seed corn for several companies during his career. He was out daily, even up to last week, checking his crops and land. One year, he and his son put up 18,000 small square bales in just six and a half days. Robert was a devoted "red tractor" farmer, and enjoyed restoring old Internationals. Over the years, he enjoyed gardening every summer and was proud of the watermelons and cantaloupes they grew. Robert also loved raising St. Bernard dogs, his current dog, Duke, was his devoted buddy. Following the death of Lois in 2007, he married Betty Bergren Porter King on May 25, 2010 at Red Oak. They enjoyed taking bus trips to many locations in Iowa and other states, playing Bingo and visiting the Senior Citizens Center. Robert was a past 4-H leader, Montgomery County Fair Board member, Montgomery County Farm Bureau Board member and present member of the Emerson Methodist Church. Robert loved spending time with his family and going to all their special events.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois on May 1, 2007; brothers-in-law: Glen Carlson, Darl Carlson, Lynn Carlson and Duane Porter; and sisters-in-law: Carolyn Carlson, Frances Carlson, Betty Carlson and Marilyn Carlson.
Robert is survived by his wife, Betty Hossle of Emerson, IA; children: Judy (Bob) Krueger of Glenwood, IA; Linda (John) Gambuto of Reno, NV; Joe (Jody) Hossle of Emerson, IA; Mike (Jamie) Hossle of Emerson, IA; Sandra (Cliff) Fleming of Winchester, CA; Lori (Donnie) Jones of Emerson, IA; Dennis Porter of Rogers, AR, Allen (Jackie) Porter of Red Oak, IA; and Nancy (Rick) Nelson of Elliott, IA; 15 grandchildren: Brian Krueger, Scott (Jennifer) Krueger, Melanie (Chris) Heliotes, Mandy (James) Metcalf, Marla Gambuto, Justin (Michele) Hossle, Jenni (Kyle) Edwards, Jamie (Edward) Huff, Nathan (Brittany) Hossle, Megan Hossle, Daniel (Alysha Coleman) Fleming, Jared (Carrie) Jones, Murphy, Cami and Lindsey Porter; great-grandchildren: Abbi and Maverick Krueger, Cole McKinley, Angela and Corbin Heliotes, Ryan and Connor Metcalf, Aaron Hossle, McCartney and Josie Edwards, Jameson and Alexander Huff, Ella Hossle, Wesley Fleming, Cole and Danielle Jones; brother, Max (Gwen) Hossle of Red Oak, IA; sister, Dorothy Porter of Essex, IA; and brother-in-law, Dale Carlson of Red Oak, IA; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and many friends.

Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday evening, September 4 at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the Emerson Methodist Church or Emerson Fire Association.
