Robert LeRoy Olson, the son of Frank A. and Evelyn M. (Anderson) Olson was born September 23, 1931, in rural Genoa, Nebraska. He passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 10 days.
Robert was raised near Genoa until he was seven years old, at which time the family moved to a farm in the Fletcher Chapel neighborhood of Cass County, Iowa. In 1941, they settled on a farm northeast of Red Oak. Robert graduated from Red Oak High School in 1949 and attended Iowa State University, where he played football. Robert was united in marriage to Marilyn L. Swanson on June 3, 1951, in Red Oak. Following college, Robert worked nine years for Iowa Power. In 1962, he began farming full time. Robert and Marilyn made their home and raised their family on a farm northeast of Red Oak. In 1990, they moved into Red Oak, but Robert continued farming until 2011. He was an avid sports fan, but more so, a fan of the players. He enjoyed following high school, college, and professional athletes and watching his children participate in their sporting events. Robert treasured being with his family.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn, on March 2, 1999; and sisters-in-law Phyllis Olson and Carolyn Olson.
Robert is survived by his children: John Olson of Ankeny, IA; Michael Olson and wife Marcie of Red Oak, IA; and Nancie Platt and husband Ryan of Emerson, IA; seven grandchildren: Emily Williams, Christian Olson, Jennie Olson, Kyle Olson, Michael Platt and wife Tracy, Hollie Platt and Daniel Platt; three great-grandchildren: Sydnie, Kaelin, and Braden Platt; and brothers: Howard Olson of Red Oak, IA; Ralph Olson and wife Joanne of Red Oak, IA; and Lyle Olson of Red Oak, IA. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
