Obituary

Rose Marie Shaw, the daughter of Hugh and Edna (Solberg) Fickel was born June 15, 1929 at Malvern, Iowa. She passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 88 years and 8 months.

Rose Marie was raised in the Malvern area and graduated from Malvern High School. While in high school, she worked for the Malvern Bank. On May 28, 1948, Rose Marie was united in marriage to Roger Lynn Shaw at Malvern, and to this union four children were born. Rose Marie and Roger farmed between Hastings and Strahan where she raised a large garden, canning many of her vegetables. She also enjoyed sewing clothes for her girls and served as a 4-H leader. Following the death of her husband in 1969, Rose Marie began working for the Glenwood State Bank. She moved to Emerson in 1970, and worked at the Emerson State Bank. In 1975, Rose Marie began working for Houghton State Bank in Red Oak, and a year later, built her second home in Red Oak. Rose Marie enjoyed the trips and friendships made with bank customers in the VIC Club. She retired after 20 years of service from Houghton State Bank as vice president of operations. Throughout the years, she was a member of the Malvern United Methodist Church, Strahan United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Red Oak. She faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher, on many committees and singing in the choir. After retirement, she volunteered at the Montgomery County Family YMCA, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital's Lemon Tree Gift Shop, and was a member of Altrusa International. She was always up for a game of pitch or coffee with her friends. Most important to Rose Marie were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved deeply and unconditionally.

Rose Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roger on October 3, 1969; infant child, Alan Lynn Shaw; brothers: Richard and Ronald Fickel; sister, Arlene Hilton and husband Wayne; brother-in-law, Lee Stribling; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alfred and Mae Shaw and special friends, Dwight and Ruth Kelley.

Rose Marie is survived by her children: Cheryl Smith of Trenton, FL, Diane Byers and husband, Jeff of Dubois, WY and Roger Shaw and wife, Rena of Coon Rapids, IA; 6 grandchildren: Anthony (Anna) Boggess, Megan Smith, Jake (Michelle) Byers, Allison (Nathan) Baas, Aaron Shaw and Rachel Shaw; 6 great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Stribling of Shenandoah, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn.
