Obituary

R.R. "Bud" Halvin, the son of Russell C. and Karin "Mary" (Johnson) Halvin was born February 23, 1937 in Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 26 days. Bud was raised in Red Oak. As a youth, he enjoyed riding horses and won many riding events. Bud graduated in 1954 from Red Oak High School. He farmed one year with Carl Halvin before joining the U. S. Marine Corps on November 30, 1956. Bud was honorably discharged on November 29, 1958 and returned to Red Oak to farm, along with feeding cattle. Bud was united in marriage to Joyce Ossian on May 17, 1959 in Stanton, Iowa, and had lived on the same farm north of Red Oak since. Bud was a true horseman, he enjoyed the science of breeding them, the love shown for raising them and the skill required for riding them. He participated in many River City Roundup events over the years. Bud also enjoyed hunting, boating, bowling and he was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. He treasured his family and loved spending time with his boys, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bud was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a 50 year plus member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge, and past president of the Mills-Montgomery County Cattleman's Association. Bud was preceded in death by his parents. Bud is survived by his wife, Joyce Halvin of Red Oak, IA; two sons: Terry Halvin of Red Oak, IA and Fred Halvin and wife Tracy of Austin, MN; six grandchildren: Ryan and wife Mandy, Brandon, Tyler, Tannah, Dana and Drew; four great-grandchildren: Travis, Tucker, Rylan and Kennedy; and sisters-in-law: Twyla McDulin and husband Charles of West Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Sandra Ballain and husband Myron of Papillion, NE; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Red Oak, IA Military Graveside Rites and Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. Dr. George Hooper, Officiating Visitation with the family will be Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Memorials may be directed to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Christian Care Endowment Fund of Good Samaritan Society or Alzheimer's Association. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
