Obituary

Ruby Maxine Black, the daughter of Carl Fredrick and Alida Cecilia (Johnson) Lonn was born July 8, 1919 in Coburg, Iowa. She passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 12 days. Ruby lived in Coburg until the age of five when the family moved to Stennett. She graduated from Stennett High School in l937. Ruby was united in marriage to Walter Eugene Black on March 31, 1940 at Red Oak, Iowa. They lived on the family farm a few years, before they purchased a farm outside of Coburg. Ruby and Walter owned and operated a dairy milking farm for 20 years. In 1966, they sold the farm and moved to an acreage on Bluegrass Road, where they lived for 22 years. In 1988, they moved into Red Oak. Ruby spent many years working beside her husband on the farm, along with being a cook for the Coburg School. While her children were growing up, Ruby was a 4-H leader and entered many projects of her own in the county fair. She also worked several years as a cleaning lady/helper for many elderly people. Ruby has been a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church all her life. She was active in Priscilla Circle, as a Sunday school teacher, overseeing banquets, knitting and crocheting hats and blankets to send to Native American babies on Reservations, working on quilts to sell at fundraisers, and crocheting bandages to send to military hospitals. Ruby was also a member of Faith Rebekah Lodge #174 and volunteered for the Red Oak Good Samaritan Society and Red Cross Bloodmobile. Ruby's hobbies included camping, fishing, gardening, cooking and baking. She always enjoyed going to the county fair and playing bingo. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter on April 7, 1996; brother, Hugo Lonn and three sisters: Anna Viola Lonn, Signa Erickson and Amy Halbert. Ruby is survived by a son, Wendell Black and wife, Jill of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Colleen Lang and husband, Randy of Omaha, NE; three grandchildren: Todd Black, Paul Black and Alicia McCormack; several great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Red Oak Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. Dr. George Hooper, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Wednesday evening at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made in Ruby's name. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
