Obituary

Stephen "Steve" Eugene Roberts, the son of Orwin E. "Robbie" and Betty Esther (Ross) Roberts was born August 30, 1951 at Mason City, Iowa. He passed away peacefully at his home in Red Oak, Iowa on Thursday, November 3, 2016, following a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 65 years, 2 months and 4 days.
Steve was raised in the communities of Mason City, Hamburg and Sidney. He was a sports enthusiast and participated in sports at Sidney before graduating with the Sidney High School class of 1969. Steve attended Marshalltown Community College, Peru State College and later graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Steve's career in law enforcement began in Nebraska City, Nebraska, and continued when he moved to Red Oak in 1973, having joined the Red Oak Police Department. On July 31, 1982, Steve was united in marriage to Kathy Cleland in Red Oak. Steve served the citizens of Red Oak for 32 years which included, serving as Chief of Police from 1999 until his retirement in 2005. He continued working as supervisor of security at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs until his health limited him. Steve loved sports and working with kids and for many years he coached for the Red Oak Community School District middle school football and basketball programs, was head coach for the high school baseball team and was a member of the varsity football coaching staff. He continued touching the lives of many young people with his active involvement in the Red Oak Red Sox baseball program, having served as president. Steve was a member of Faith Community Church of Red Oak and the Southwest Iowa Peace Officers Association. His hobby was helping people and keeping them safe.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Robbie and Betty Roberts and father-in-law, Rip Cleland.
Steve is survived by his wife, Kathy Roberts of Red Oak, IA; 7 children: Kaeleen (Michael Josephson) Roberts of Red Oak, IA, Donna "DJ" Roberts of Lewis, IA, Kyle Roberts of Iowa City, IA, Mark (Victoria) Roberts of Portland, OR, Morgan "Mo" (Jennifer) Roberts of Stanton, IA, Shona (Rich) Pennington Otto of Marshalltown, IA and Shanon (James Darrow) Pennington of Marshalltown, IA; 18 grandchildren: Noah Roberts, Victoria and Jet Josephson, Charles, Eli, Will, Nic and Gracie Roberts, Denton True Roberts, Caitlynn (Cody) Bartling, Jordan Pennington, Amanda, Jake, Bree and Gage Darrow, Kaylee, Kami and Reese Otto; uncle, Bob Ross of Cedar Falls, IA; mother-in-law, Anna Marie Cleland of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law, Deborah (Harry) Myers of Shenandoah, IA; and brother-in-law, Steve (Bev) Cleland of Red Oak, IA; cousins and a host of friends.
