John Steven Wheeler, the son of John B. and Ethel F. (Stevens) Wheeler was born April 2, 1933 at Tarkio, Missouri. He passed away on Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 1 day. Steve graduated from Tarkio High School and attended two year at Tarkio College, Tarkio Missouri. He made his home in Red Oak in the fall of 1954. Steve's career was in the grocery business and over the years, he worked for Safeway, Hunts Super Valu and Hy-Vee. In 1995, he slowed down and worked part-time until 2000, when he retired. Steve was united in marriage to Judy Hayes Smith on January 16, 1981 at Las Vegas, NV. Steve was an avid bowler and in 1977, rolled the first 300 game at Red Oak Lanes. He enjoyed sports and was a faithful St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He was also a member of the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. A favorite quote of Steve's was by Will Rogers, "We are just here for a spell and then pass on. So get a few laughs and do the best you can!!" He not only liked this quote, but tried to live it throughout his life. Steve treasured his family and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Beryl Allen Wheeler. Steve is survived by his wife, Judy Wheeler of Red Oak, IA; daughters: Nicci Wheeler of Tarkio, MO; Dawn (Kip) Myers of Azle, TX; Lisa (Joe) Kiefer of Estherville, IA; Cindy (Nick) Koch of Council Bluffs, IA; and Debra Rhoten of Council Bluffs, IA; son, David (Anita) Smith of Corpus Christi, TX; 8 grandchildren: Dustin (Veronica) Myers, Kellen Myers, Melissa (Tony) Bosnic, Matt (Jessica) Smith, Michelle Smith, Travis (Maranda) Kazmerzak, Seth (Kalla) Kazmerzak and Joel Kazmerzak; 5 great-grandchildren: Rayna, Nickolas, Christian, Lincoln and Jacob; sisters-in-law: Francis Wheeler of Seward, NE; Marilyn Westover of Red Oak, IA; Laura Hayes of Red Oak, IA; and Linda (Greg) Rodgers of Red Oak, IA; brothers-in-law: Donald Hayes of Indian Town, FL; Everett (Hazel) Hayes of Margate, FL; Jerry Hayes of Seabring, FL; Leroy (Geraldine) Hayes of Jacksonville, FL; Bob (Dottie) Hayes of Bull Head City, AZ; and Russell (Brenda) Hayes of Red Oak, IA; other relatives and friends. Steve's wishes were to be cremated. A private family burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa.
