Velma Christine Payne, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Larsen) Vehe was born December 25, 1928 at Hinton, Iowa. She passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Regency Rehab Center, Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 85 years and 1 day. Velma was raised in the rural Hinton area and attended junior high and high school in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from Sioux City Central High School in l946. Velma attended business school in Sioux City and became an executive secretary for Dun and Bradstreet for eight years. On April 11, 1953, Velma was united in marriage to Kenneth Payne in Sioux City. She and Kenneth made Sioux City their home and were blessed with 5 children. Velma later returned to her business career working for Sioux City's KTIV Channel 4 TV, and then for AAA Insurance for ten years. After retirement, she kept busy driving cars for area auto dealers and worked for the Sioux City School District, each for five years. Velma enjoyed cooking, baking and was a beautiful seamstress. She loved playing bridge with her local bridge clubs and cards each week with her brother and sisters. Velma was an active lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. She was a faithful helper with church activities and sang in the choir. Velma dearly loved her family and treasured spending time with them. In 2008, she became a resident of Regency Rehab in Council Bluffs. Velma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth on October 8, 1981; son, John in infancy on December 31, 1959; four sisters, one brother, and son-in-law, Dr. Kent Webb. Velma is survived by four children: Jean Webb of Red Oak, IA, Roy (Tena) Payne of Keller, TX, Christine (Rich) Dineff of Scottsdale, AZ and Marilyn Johnson of Tempe, AZ; 12 grandchildren: Lisa Jones, Eric Jones, Melissa Webb, Michael Webb, Kenny Payne, Courtney Payne, Hannah Payne, Sarah Dineff, Rachel Dineff, Nicole Dineff, Nicholas Johnson and Mitchell Johnson; 2 great-grandchildren: Conrad Sauver and Oliver Webb; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak, Iowa Rev. Caryn Pedersen, Officiating Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa A memorial is being established in Velma's name.
