Vernelle June (Nell) Requist Franson, the daughter of Dale A. and Mamie R. (Newman) Requist was born June 13, 1928, on a farm south of Red Oak, Iowa. She passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at her home in Villisca, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 10 month and 29 days. Nell attended school in Red Oak and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1945. Nell was united in marriage to Harry Franson on May 18, 1946 and was blessed with five children. Nell was employed at the Villisca Mutual Savings & Loan, later known as Scandia S&L, and then First Financial S&L from 1966 until it closed in 1986. She then worked at the Page County ASCS office in Clarinda, until she retired in 1991. Since 1970, Nell called Villisca her home. Nell kept busy maintaining her home and yard, but was also active with bowling, golf, oil painting, antiquing, knitting and crocheting. She had served on the election board, and was also the ladies golf club treasurer for 10 years. She was a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer for 12 years. Nell was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joan Brown in 1998. Nell is survived by her children: Kirk Franson and wife Barbara of Villisca, IA; Connie Muller and husband Wendell of Massena, IA; Greg Franson and wife Debra of Grant, IA; Barbara Shipley and husband Stanley of Tenville, IA; and Bryce Franson and wife Jeanne of Villisca, IA; 11 grandchildren: Brad Franson and wife Angi, Julie Cooper and husband David, Jennifer Saathoff and husband Lee, Clayton Muller and wife Melanie, Ann Sarosi and husband John, Kyle Franson, Brian Franson, Clint Shipley, Laura Shipley, Jake Franson, and Kate Franson; nine great-grand children; sister Naurine McCormick of Medford, OR; and brother Norris Requist of Denver, CO. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. *A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, May 15, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Villisca, Iowa. *Private Family Graveside Service will be held prior to the Celebration Service. *A memorial is being established and may be made to the Nell Franson Memorial. *Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
