Obituary

Virginia Lee Malmquist, the daughter of James R. and June E. (Springer) Simmonds was born March 2, 1942 at Brush, Colorado. She passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at her home in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 9 days. Virginia was raised in Colorado until the age of five, when the family made their home in Iowa. In 1959, Virginia graduated from Emerson High School and started nurses training at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Virginia was united in marriage to Richard C. "Dick" Malmquist on May 21, 1966 at Worthington, Minnesota. They lived in Red Oak, and for many years at Viking Village, Stanton, Iowa, before moving back to Red Oak in 1998. Virginia's career in nursing began as a nurse aide until 1985, when she received her LPN from Iowa Western Community College. Throughout her nursing career, she devoted 25 years to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and 8 years to the Red Oak Good Samaritan Society's Alzheimer's Unit, until her retirement in 2004. Virginia was a member of the First Christian Church in Red Oak. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, crocheting, macramé, traveling, and especially loved spending time with family. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Dick on July 25, 2001. Virginia is survived by her children: J. Scott Malmquist of Red Oak, IA; and Jamie Hossle and husband Mike of Emerson, IA; two grandchildren: Nathan Hossle and Megan Hossle; great-granddaughter, Ella Spurgis; three sisters: Saundra Simmonds of Colorado Springs, CO; Linda (Larry) Hietbrink of Cameron, MO; and Rita (Dave) Renz of Colorado Springs, CO; six brothers: Ronald (Delores) Simmonds of Evanston, WY; Joe (Collette) Simmonds of Washougal, WA; David (Libby) Simmonds of Junction City, KY; Mike (Cindy) Simmonds of Shenandoah, IA; John (Naomi) Simmonds of Red Oak, IA; and Tom (Debra) Simmonds of Junction City, KY; and brother-in-law, Everett Malmquist of Red Oak, IA; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 15, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Visitation with the family on Sunday, June 14, 2015 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Memorials may be directed to the Montgomery County Animal Rescue.
