Obituary

Wayne L. Sands, the son of Gene A. and Mabel Lafferty Sands was born October 5, 1927 at Elliott, Iowa. He died on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at his home in Red Oak, Iowa after an extended illness at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 22 days. Wayne was raised in the Elliott and Griswold area. He entered the U.S. Army on February 26, 1946 serving with the 1938th Engineer Unit. Wayne had been stationed at Spokane, WA; San Francisco, CA; and Tokyo, Japan. He was honorably discharged on August 9, 1947. Wayne was united in marriage to Georgia ""Colleen"" Vanderhoof on January 14, 1948 in Hiawatha, KS. They made their home in Red Oak where they have lived 60 years. Wayne began his career as an auto-mechanic for the Chevrolet Dealer in Red Oak. He also owned and operated the Deep Rock Gas station. Later, he worked for K-Mart and managed their Auto Department. Wayne then worked many years for Montgomery County Secondary Roads Department. Following the Roads Department, he performed maintenance duties at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and Houghton State Bank. Wayne loved to tinker in his shop at home, and enjoyed his yard work. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers: Donald and Edward. Wayne is survived by his wife: Georgia ""Colleen"" Sands of Red Oak, IA; children: Larry Sands of Red Oak, IA; Ricky Sands and his wife Lois of Red Oak, IA; Rita Bienhoff and husband Mark of Villisca, IA; 5 granddaughters: Bethany Griffeth, Rebecca Sands, Kathy Bush, Jody Sands, Dawn Dozier; 3 great-grandchildren: Lexuz, Kya, Dakota; 1 great-great-grandchild: Marcus; sister: Mrs. Alberta Cox of Albany, OR; other relatives and many friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Visitation with the family present at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Thursday evening, February 28 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A memorial is being established in his name. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
