William Roy ""Bill"" Fort, the son of Francis ""Ted"" and Gladys Keim Fort was born February 6, 1926 in Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 18 days. Bill was raised in Red Oak and after his junior year of high school entered the U.S. Navy. He entered the Navy on September 22, 1943, where he completed boot camp at Farragut, ID and served in Memphis, TN, Treasure Island and the Admiralty Islands during WW II. He was honorably discharged on January 16, 1946. Bill was united in marriage to Doris P. Wynn on September 1, 1944 in Red Oak, IA. Bill and Doris returned to Red Oak in 1946 and he completed his senior year, graduating in 1947. Bill began his career at Red Oak Machine in 1947 along side his father and brother. He was an employee, co-owner, and later sole owner and operator of Red Oak Machine. Bill continued working after losing his vision due to diabetes in August of 1967. He retired in 2003, after 56 years of dedication to his loyal customers. Bill enjoyed woodworking, and even after loosing his sight, completed many projects. For 20 years, he made and donated little tables for the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Ball. Bill was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Red Oak, and Iowa Blacksmith and Welders Association. Bill and Doris enjoyed many trips to Branson, and he was especially fond of music and pie. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Betty Crowe and husband Jim, and Joyce Gesiriech; and brother-in-law, Richard Carlson. Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris P. Fort of Red Oak, IA; children: Linda Wollenhaupt and husband Lee of Red Oak, IA; Trudy Jenkins and husband Bryan of Wales, IA; Vicki Norton and husband Steve of Lincoln, NE; and Jeff Fort and wife Kelly of Stanton, IA; 11 grandchildren: Ryan Angela Atkinson of Griswold, IA; Tracy Shane Johnson of Stanton, IA; Jana Jenkins of Stanton, IA; David Corrine Jenkins of Red Oak, IA; Daniel Jenkins of Council Bluffs, IA; Jacob Whitney Fort of Council Bluffs, IA; Justin Reagan Fort of Collinsville, OK; Jenni Nick Stock of Gravois Mills, MO; Jordan Fort special friend, Maci Kinard of Columbia, MO; Angie Trevor Jenkins of Palo, IA; and Kristin Brandon Morgan of Lincoln, NE; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Jack Fort and wife Dolores of Red Oak, IA; sister, Mary Carlson of Oak Grove, MO; brother-in-law, Rollin Gesiriech of Urbandale, IA; and special cousin, Jeanne Doughten of Ankeny, IA; many nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, Red Oak Military graveside rites and burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. JoAnn Thomas, Officiating Open viewing on Monday May 28th beginning at 3:00 p.m. with family visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Memorials to Diabetes Association, First Christian Church or Red Oak Fire & Rescue Association.
